Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai China. This 2000 bed hospital is the largest and highest rated in China. This is part of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Schematic for the seven chamber whole room indirect calorimeter (WRIC). This comprises of four 23-hour studies, two resting metabolic rate/thermic effect of food (RMR/TEF) and one simulated altitude WRIC’s, respectively.

Ruijin Hospital’s WRIC laboratory centralized data acquisition and analysis center. This features continuous analysis of real time data from each of the WRIC’s.

One of the 23-hour studies chambers within the Ruijin Hospital WRIC. It is essentially the size of a small studio apartment with an interior volume of 28,500 liters. This chamber obtains metabolic measurements and macro-nutrient utilization during the 23-hour or longer study.

Entry air-gasketed door to one of the RMR/TEF WRIC’s. This also shows the

small bi-level pass throughs. Blood sampling port in window (not shown).

Interior of one of the RMR/TEF WRIC’s. These rooms have an interior volume of 8,500 liters and contains a comfortable reclining chair rated to 200 kg. Room also features a toilet and sink for TEF studies lasting several hours.

Simulated altitude WRIC oxygen scrubber modules. Pictured are six of the 12 modules necessary to scrub enough oxygen out of the air to simulate up to 20,000 feet altitude (6096 meters).

Another view of the interior within one of the 23-hour studies WRIC’s. Subject comforts include WIFI, smart mirrors, internet television, stereo speakers and LED dimmable lighting.

Interior within the simulated altitude 23-hour studies WRIC. The interior is similar to the other four 23-hour studies WRIC’s. Finally each WRIC has a window with a view to the outside.

One of the control rooms featuring bi-level pass throughs, Sable Systems Promethion instrumentation (center) and Dell All-In-One computers on each side of the instruments. These integrated instruments measure oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor pressure within the WRIC. This eliminates the need for drying the sample gases.

Simulated altitude 23-hour studies WRIC air-lock double pressurized gasketed entry doors. Once inside, one door closes while the other one can be opened to enter the WRIC.

Blood sampling port for the RMR/TEF WRIC’s-left is the front and the right the back. There are covers (not shown) that close them when not in use.

Sea level air buffer space for all the WRIC chambers, other than the one for simulated altitude chamber, which has its own dedicated air supply buffer space. This is located behind all the WRIC’s and has its own separate climate control.
